New iPhone

I got my new iPhone yesterday and tonight, after several hours of upgrading and modifying my WordPress install, I’m now posting from my phone. It’s pretty cool.

Apple

So I went out and did it last night. After months of hemming/hawing I decided that I would just order the damn thing already. What put me over the edge was that tonight (even as I type) my monitor (19″ LCD) on my mid-2005 HP 3.0GHz Pentium 4 is going crazy. Colors are everywhere and there’s a weird ghosting. Yes, I could go out and get a new flat-panel but that would just be chasing after it with bad money.

I should join the Apple ranks (just as my wife did several years ago when I got her a MacBook and several months ago when I bought her another one to replace the first one that got stolen) within a week. I got a refurb one b/c it will save me a couple hundred bucks and I don’t do anything very taxing on my computer any longer. I also ordered 4GB of RAM tonight so I’ll install that when I get the iMac.

I hate thieves

The woman was down with her friends in Las Vegas this past weekend. I’m probably never going to really know what they all did down there but I’ve got a pretty good idea. I’ve got no problems with my speculative abilities, I’m mad at the denizens of Sin City. See, her MacBook and iPod were stolen from her hotel room. That really pisses me off. These were her things. I bought the MacBook for her last year and the iPod for Christmas. What the hell are you thieving bastards doing? You suck!

It’s Cold and I’m Busy

I am really busy at work. I don’t believe I’ve been as busy as I am ever before at my current position. I completed a trial just seven working days ago and I’m now on day two of my current trial. Look, don’t get me wrong, I like trials. It’s a really great way to get out of the office and to slough off work on the co-workers (something I believe I’m really good at doing). It also lets me complain, swear in my office, and make generally poor comments about other people without getting into any trouble whatsoever. I view that as a massive bonus. On the flip-side, I am not supposed to be a trial attorney right now and my “real” job is suffering because of the office’s staffing shortages.

It is also really cold outside. I’ve been here for several years now and I cannot remember a string of days as cold as it has been since last week. It was -15 this morning on my drive to work. It was -17 yesterday. It was -10 on Sunday. Hell, we even had ice fog here in town. I’ve never seen ice fog in Anchorage before. When I lived in Fairbanks, we had it all the freaking time in winter but then again it was -40 at least every other week for a day or two each winter. We also had times when it never got hotter (using that term loosely) than -20 for weeks on end so ice fog was an annual occurrence. Now, ice fog is when the moisture from animals, people and buildings is trapped at a low altitude because it is too cold for the heat to rise. Mixed inside that fog (which is a collection of ice crystals at such low temperatures rather than actual water vapor) are all the nasty particulates of city life such as car exhaust, dust, wood smoke, building exhaust gases, and exhaust from coal-burning power stations.

Yummy!

With all of that in mind, can you agree with me that I can be in a crappy mood if I want?

On a side-note, I am really bummed that I do not have the disposable income to get rid of my cell phone and buy an iPhone. I really really really want one.

Christmas Presents

Yesterday I finally got around to shopping for presents. It seemed the appropriate day. I had some time by myself and some money in my pocket.

Started off with a trip to the MacStore down on Lake Otis. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it at first but in the end I bought a MacBook for Anna as a present. It’s the base model but I got Applecare with it because when I haven’t gotten extended warranties in the past for my laptops the laptops have always broken. It’s just one of those things. Now, of course, when I do buy the extended warranties (which I do only on expensive items, not $200 stereos or anything like that) nothing ever goes wrong. But, I’m thinking there may be something that will go amiss as to the wireless connection with my Netgear router so I can always call Apple and that will be sorted out.

Next on the list was an iPod Shuffle 2G. The store was out of them (very knowledgeable staff btw) but I knew Anna wanted one so I got her a Nano 2G instead. Vastly different types of iPods but that’s what Christmas is for, right? Giving? Making people whom you love happy? Or is it just the simple things like not being a complete bastard to others for a day or two? I think I’ll go with the latter.

Finished off the shopping today with some headphones that Anna wanted. After that, I called the sister and got her to do some shopping for the parents as I live very far away from them and she, well, doesn’t. Next, called the mother and spoke with her in our weekly telephone conversation. Got her to go ahead and buy stuff for the sister for me due to the same reason I didn’t buy the parents gifts (geography).

Finally, came home, put up the new stockings in front of the fireplace and ate some semi-edible fancy soup.
