Random Thoughts

Now that I’ve discovered that a certain opposing counsel is reading this site I’d just like to say that I don’t envy that attorney’s job.

Dealing with clients? Ugh.

Lacking discretion as to dealing cases? Ugh.

Not having the ultimate decision-making ability? Ugh.

I’m very happy with many aspects of my job. Topping that list is most certainly the fact that I do not have to really answer to some supervisor who second guesses my every move. I am the face of the State in court. It is me who civilians get to know when they sit on a jury. Who scrutinizes my decisions? Who takes the praise when I do right? Who refuses to accept blame when I screw up? No one scrutinizes my decisions; I just get in trouble if something goes wrong. I get the praise. I get yelled at when I screw up. These are excellent traits to have in a job.

The down side? Well, rather shitty pay compared to my civil law brethren. But, they sit in their offices, never coming to court. Never having that look of ‘oh shit’ when a witness at trial says something different. We don’t do depositions in criminal cases. We don’t have months and months to prepare for a three week unclassified felony jury trial. We don’t do this for money. We do what we do (just like a certain opposing counsel) because it the right thing to do.

It’s coming. Soon. The wedding invitations are all ready to go. Done with all the inserts and only mildly scared of the entire process. Modified the wedding website tonight and it hit me even harder than before.

‘Oh my God! What have I gotten myself into?’

I’m probably just overreacting. The dog, as she lay on the floor near by feet, does not appear too concerned about this whole marriage thing. She still has that vacant look on her face most of time. The other times she pierces me with her brown eyes as if she wants to eat my foot for some perceived slight. That’s not going to change, is it? I don’t think so.

It’s Snowing

What a difference a couple days make, eh?

It was just three days ago that it was raining and I was walking to my office when I slipped on the ice and fell. Ahh, excruciating back pain! Not another feeling like it in the entire world. After leaving work almost as quickly as I got there and missing an entire day at work, I, being the amazing person that I am, went back to work.

Nothing spells the phrase “married to the job” like searing back pain and cuts on one hand caused by ice.

My week has been completely ruined by the awful circumstances that is my trial. Progressing to the seventh circle of Hell today was not what I had in mind but I really didn’t have much of a choice. So, now that my skiing options have been utterly ruined for this week, I get to look outside and observe the blizzard of fresh powder that now blankets my neighborhood.

It’s Raining

Everyone and everything is conspiring against me and my winter skiing fun. With tomorrow a holiday (for a truly great man) I was looking forward to a day ‘off’ from work by doing some nice skiing at Alyeska. With the temperature now 34 at my house, 37 at the base of the mountain, and rain coming down, I believe my day tomorrow will be ruined. That sucks. All I want to do is sit on a ski lift, admire the view of the ocean, and ski some of the best powder in the world. Instead, I think it will have to wait until the temps drop a few degrees and we get some more snow to cover up the slush.

Trial on a Wednesday?

After a week full of extremely complicated legal issues coupled with long hearings and still being “acting” supervisor, I begin a felony assault trial tomorrow morning. No worries though. It’s only a three-year old case where a crucial witness is unavailable. No problem.

Found Photographs

This past week the missus discovered twenty-seven un-developed rolls of film (remember those cameras? with real film inside?) in a plastic ziploc bag. Well, a hundred dollars later spent at Costco and we’ve got lots of photos (1.8gb worth) from various trips and places we’ve lived. These photos included the hovercraft from Bethel, a shot of downtown Anchorage, and photos from a fish camp on the upper Kuskokwim River.
