Crazy Photo Comparison

While trolling the internet this afternoon during my lunch break I came across the Wikipedia article on the Battle of Manila. Reading down it I saw this photo:

I immediately realized that I had a photo of myself standing in that exact spot.

Look closely. You can see the differences in stone work between the original stone and the repairs made post-WW2.

Creepy but cool.

Homer

Returned from a weekend trip to Homer last night. Drove down there (225 miles) on Saturday. We stayed at Alaska Adventure Cabins in the Moose-Caboose. Unfortunately, while the weather was great once we arrived (sunny and just a few clouds in the sky) the drive down was very wet and windy.

We planned to go halibut fishing on Sunday morning so we got up at 4am and drove up to Deep Creek where we met up with our charter – Irish Lords – but it didn’t look good. We went down to the beach and saw one thing – the boats were coming right back out of the water. We were told there were 8-9 foot swells just 2 miles off the beach. That’s bad, we were told. So despite it being the busiest fishing day of the year, no one went fishing that day. Totally sucked.

We compensated by driving back to Homer, eating at Spit Sisters then driving over to Homer Brewing Company where we got 1.5 gallons (3 growlers’ worth) of beer. Bought some steaks and potatoes and went back to the Moose-Caboose. Sitting on the deck in the sun, drinking lots of beer (we actually had to go back to a liquor store and buy more beer as 1.5 gallons is not enough for 4 people) and enjoying our day off from work. We had the best view of Kachemak Bay and the surrounding mountains.

So, we didn’t get a chance to fish but we had a great weekend away from work and home. Ate some good steaks, drank a lot of beer, enjoyed the weather. Good times.

Trial finished.

The verdicts have been read. The victim’s family is very happy for the verdict but very sad still given their loss. The defendant’s family is sad. Now we wait until sentencing.

Now we wait.

Closing arguments have concluded. The jury instructions (all 45 of them) have been read to the jury. The exhibits have been looked over by counsel and sent back to the jury. Now we wait for the verdicts.

Work continues

I believe the current trial will end tomorrow. One can never be too certain about such things but it is well within the realm of possibility given the case’s current posture. If it does end tomorrow I’ll take a day or two off later this week so I can finish cleaning up my yard.

Margaret Cho

Went to the Margaret Cho’s “Beautiful Tour” last night at the Atwood Concert Hall here in sunny downtown Anchorage. Pretty damn funny but a little too raunchy for me. I know that sounds a bit odd coming from me the king of inappropriate comments. I’ve just never been that much of a “dirty comic” guy – never cared for Andrew Dice Clay or Sam Kinison. Margaret Cho certainly fits into that general mold at times except unlike Kinison or Dice Clay she’s not a homophobe playing on the prejudices of others for laughs. There were times during her act that I said to myself, “This is a bit too much.” But, she’s a very funny comedienne who knows her audience (gays and very liberal people) extremely well.
